Ancillary texts

My ancillary texts consists of a magazine advertisement and a digipak for a CD/DVD combination.

Firstly, I created a magazine advertisement using the images taken when I shot my music video. For this, I used many conventions of indie-folk. This includes, the use of nature, as this is in pretty much every indie-folk has this included in their videos and promotional material. I also made the decision to not make 'Free son' the main focal point of my piece, this is also because a natural theme is also very common in indie-folk magazines, the choice to shoot the artist facing away as this represents the way music is. As in nowadays popular music is electronic and my artists genre is 'backwards' from that. I included a website for my artist (which is available to purchase so is original) and some media platforms it is available on, as well as the release date which also follows the conventions for new music being released from new artists - as January "is a great month to release an album. Things start to quiet down witmedia the few months leading up to January, and people are generally ready to dig in with zest and vigor after the holiday break." The image I used was at first, not very appropriate for a magazine advertisement as it was originally a landscape image, however, I really liked the mise-en-scene of the image, where the sun is directly in the middle, beaming a ray of light onto the artist. I also really liked the pathway and how it is surrounded in bushes and trees, i.e. nature, which is the biggest connotation of the indie folk genre. so therefore I had to crop it into a portrait in order to use this.
For my digipack, I aimed to produce something similar to my magazine advertisement, however, I wanted to utilize a bluer side of nature, using the sea and in this case, the river Humber and the Humber Bridge. I shot these images the second time I went to gather footage and images. The inclusion of the silhouette of the tree and the birds I feel are a fitting touch to the song I used as my music video (Beautiful birds), and also what Passenger the singer who originally sings my piece had on his album 'all the little lights' front cover, which was also a silhouette of nature. On the spine, I included the logo DVD, as it is a DVD/CD package. The track list is a list of passengers 'top' songs, as I felt that continuity of creating my artist would suit having him 'perform' passengers songs. The images I used were taken the second and third time I went out to shoot, as I felt that having too much of the forest side of the foreshore was a little over the top, so, sticking to the 'natural' conventions, I decided to venture out of the little Switzerland and onto the foreshore to shoot some stills. I also shot some video clips, but I feel that it was too different to what my video had in it already, so I stuck to what I had originally.
